Friday Talking Points — GOP Anti-Trump Rants

This column has always loved a good rant. Most of the time, we provide our own rant at the end of the column, on a subject too big to be contained in talking points. This week, we provide a number of rants from Republicans about their very own party’s presidential nominee. Yes, it’s only August and the Republican Party is coming apart at the seams. Which, of course, makes for great summertime reading for all!

Before we get to all the Republican-on-Republican violence, though, we’ve got to cast an eye over the week that was. If there’s one thing that is unmistakably true about Donald Trump it is that he just can’t help himself. You can read that literally — nothing he seems to do ever improves his standing with the general electorate — or as a metaphor for Trump’s inability to stop saying silly and outrageous things in public. Either way, Trump certainly does pack a lot into a single campaign week, and can probably be expected to continue doing so right up to Election Day.

This was (as were many other previous weeks in the campaign calendar) supposed to be the week when Donald Trump successfully “pivoted” and turned everything around. To say that didn’t happen would be an understatement. Hillary Clinton had a mini-scandal break that even involved emails, and yet it was barely a story in the political world (the emails weren’t all that damning, even to anti-Clinton types) — because Trump was, once again, sucking up all the oxygen.

Trump started the week off with a serious, read-from-a-TelePrompTer speech on the economy. This was the big pivot, folks! Everyone look — Trump’s being serious. Right up until he mispronounced the word “cities,” inexplicably replacing the “c” with a “t.” So much for being serious.

Later in the week, Trump claimed that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton got together a few years ago and said to each other: “Hey, we’ve got some free time, why not start a jihadist group in Iran and Syria?” No, really — Trump claimed both Obama and Clinton were not only “founders” of the Islamic State, but apparently also that the Islamic State has somehow become a sports league who hands out “most valuable player” awards — which would, of course, go to Obama and Clinton. Got all that? When gently asked to perhaps rephrase his statement a bit, Trump (of course) declined.

Trump also proposed during the week that U.S. civilians accused of terrorism either be sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or be tried in military tribunals. This remark, while shockingly unconstitutional, kind of got lost in the whirlwind, though.

Much more attention was paid to Trump using the “Second Amendment people” dog-whistle to a crowd, suggesting that perhaps guns would be the best answer if President Hillary Clinton ever started trying to appoint federal judges.

Once again, any one of these statements would have been a career-ender for just about any political candidate imaginable, but then Donald Trump is beyond “imaginable” and always has been.

Trump utterly blew his planned pivot to seriousness, pretty much all week long. He even blew a chance to rip into Clinton for having the Orlando shooter’s father behind her at a rally — while congressional-page-enthusiast Mark Foley was sitting right behind Trump. It’s like we’ve all fallen into a bad Hollywood script that would never have been greenlighted for a movie, or something.

While Trump continues to absolutely tank in the polls (including all of the swing states he would need to claim victory), the Republican National Committee is apparently getting a wee bit nervous. They’re holding what is being described as a “come to Jesus” meeting with Trump campaign staffers today, so who knows what will happen next? Some prominent Republicans are already publicly calling for the R.N.C. to direct all its money away from Trump and instead towards desperately trying to hold onto some Senate and House seats, but we’ll get to that in the talking points section.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has pulled all advertising out of Virginia and Colorado, because they consider those two swing states in the bag for Clinton. Instead, they’re expanding operations in (are you sitting down?) Arizona and Georgia. No wonder some Republicans are already darkly muttering about the impending landslide that’s going to bury Trump. Hillary Clinton even wrote an op-ed for a Utah paper, a formerly reddest-of-the-red state that could also flip for her.

Team Clinton is almost gleeful in their triangulation plans, at this point. Hillary is reaching out to Republican voters everywhere, but in doing so she risks generating some backlash among progressives, who already mistrust her. But the confidence being exuded by the Clinton campaign is palpable, and today Hillary released her 2015 tax return while taunting Trump to do the same (with a new “What’s he trying to hide” ad).

All that, in one week. Whew! And it’s only August… things will undoubtedly speed up even further in the coming months. But for now, let’s move right along to the awards.

Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week

Senator Bernie Sanders gets a Honorable Mention this week, for clearly denouncing the decision made this week by the Drug Enforcement Agency to keep marijuana on Schedule I, a definition that includes the phrase “has no currently accepted medical use” — even though half of the United States have now legalized medicinal use. Sanders is also co-sponsor in the Senate of a bill that would throw the legal issue to the states once and for all. See my column from yesterday for more details about this backward-facing decision, but it’s good to see a politician who isn’t afraid to get on the right side of history in such fashion.

But the Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week this week goes to none other than President Obama. What with everyone intensely watching all the polling surrounding the presidential race, Obama’s job approval numbers haven’t been in the news of late. They should be, however.

This week, on the Real Clear Politics tracking page, Obama sits at 51.9 percent approval from the public, with only 44.2 percent disapproval. Those are better numbers than he’s seen since the second month of his second term, three-and-a-half years ago. Obama not only has been rising all year long, but he also got a convention “bump” in the polls on top of it. This should cheer up Hillary Clinton, because presidential job approval polling is very predictive of who will win in November. If Obama keeps his numbers above 50 until then — as now seems entirely possible — then Clinton might just be a shoo-in.

There’s a simple explanation for this trend. It’s not because of some big legislative victory Obama just won in Congress (Congress has barely done anything this year). It’s not because of some dramatic foreign or domestic policy win, either. Obama is rising in the public’s estimation because people are now being seriously confronted with the two candidates who might be our next president. In other words, the more the public pays attention to the 2016 campaign, the better they think of the job Barack Obama is doing.

One of the most amusing moments at the Democratic National Convention was hearing, during President Obama’s speech, several shouts of “Four more years!” (even though this is constitutionally impossible). It seems a whole lot of other people are going to miss Obama when he’s gone, and his spike upwards in the polls to almost 52 percent approval wins President Obama this week’s Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week.

Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week

We almost didn’t have anyone to give this week’s Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week award, but one really stupid gaffe caught our eye at the last moment.

Congressman Patrick Murphy is running in the Democratic primary in Florida to be the Democrat to take on Marco Rubio. While criticizing Donald Trump (and his “hatred and fear-mongering”), Murphy had the following to say, to Jorge Ramos:

We are stronger as one, as a united country. That’s what makes this country so beautiful and so unique. You know, you think of the Statue of Liberty, right? And all of us. I’m an immigrant. We’re all basically immigrants here. And you think of that beacon of hope, of opportunity, and Trump is tearing that apart. And that is scary to me.

Except that he’s not actually an immigrant. From his own official biography page, he was “born and raised in Florida, spending most of his childhood along the South Florida coast.” He’s also already gotten into trouble about exaggerating his own history during his campaign — which would tend to make you a lot more careful about what you say, you would think.

Reasonable people can interpret this as a weak attempt at a sweeping statement. “I’m an immigrant,” Murphy says, in the same spirit that we were all Charlie Hebdo, in other words. “Most Americans are,” Murphy might have said, “if you go back far enough in their family, immigrants.” Unfortunately he didn’t say that. He said “I’m an immigrant” when he most decidedly is not one. In Florida, where a lot of people care about that particular distinction.

This was a stumble, not an enormous fall. As we said, it almost doesn’t even reach the level of the MDDOTW award, but for his political misstatement he was more disappointing than any other Democrat this week, so we decided to go ahead and give Murphy the award anyway.

[Contact Representative Patrick Murphy on his House contact page, to let him know what you think of his actions.]

Friday Talking Points

Volume 403 (8/12/16)

It is extraordinarily rare for prominent members of a political party to publicly denounce their chosen presidential nominee. It’s so rare in normal elections that it becomes big news immediately. This election, however, it has become almost commonplace for Republicans to repudiate Donald Trump’s candidacy. As a mark of how commonplace it is, we had not just one scathing indictment of Trump and his campaign this week, but three.

The first is from Republican Senator Susan Collins, of Maine, who penned an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, explaining why she cannot bring herself to vote for or support her party’s nominee. The second was from a group of 50 national security professionals stretching from the Nixon administration to the Cheney administration (whoops, we meant to say the “Bush administration,” obviously). Kidding aside, these are the serious foreign policy types on the right, and they not only stated they weren’t going to vote for Trump, they predicted that if he wins he will be “the most reckless President in American history.” And the third public evisceration of Trump came from 70 Republicans who called on the Republican National Committee to “immediately halt all support for Donald Trump and invest its resources in a real and winnable campaign to save the Republican Senate and House.”

So with that wealth of anti-Trump material coming from his own party, it seems almost redundant to come up with Democratic talking points this week. There is plenty of material available — just in the past week alone — that badmouths Trump worse than we could hope to do. So we’re just going to provide excerpts from these three documents, with a bonus quote at the end, just for the heck of it.

Senator Susan Collins

Senator Collins started her opinion piece off with a flat statement: “I will not be voting for Donald Trump for president.” She explains how she struggled with this decision, but Donald Trump just made it harder and harder for her to explain away his own behavior.

With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize. But it was his attacks directed at people who could not respond on an equal footing — either because they do not share his power or stature or because professional responsibility precluded them from engaging at such a level — that revealed Mr. Trump as unworthy of being our president.

My conclusion about Mr. Trump’s unsuitability for office is based on his disregard for the precept of treating others with respect, an idea that should transcend politics. Instead, he opts to mock the vulnerable and inflame prejudices by attacking ethnic and religious minorities. Three incidents in particular have led me to the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgment required to be president.

Collins then lists her three incidents — Trump mocking a reporter for his disability, Trump stating that a judge born in Indiana couldn’t possibly be fair to him because of his “Mexican heritage,” and Trump’s attacks on the Gold Star parents who appeared at the Democratic National Convention. Each time, says Collins, she “waited in vain for Mr. Trump to retract his words.” Then she begins painting a larger picture.

I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so. It is reckless for a presidential candidate to publicly raise doubts about honoring treaty commitments with our allies. Mr. Trump’s tendency to lash out when challenged further escalates the possibility of disputes spinning dangerously out of control.

I had hoped that we would see a “new” Donald Trump as a general-election candidate — one who would focus on jobs and the economy, tone down his rhetoric, develop more thoughtful policies and, yes, apologize for ill-tempered rants. But the unpleasant reality that I have had to accept is that there will be no “new” Donald Trump, just the same candidate who will slash and burn and trample anything and anyone he perceives as being in his way or an easy scapegoat. Regrettably, his essential character appears to be fixed, and he seems incapable of change or growth.

Pretty harsh, but this was actually the kindest towards Trump of the three documents released this week. Which brings us to the next one, from the foreign policy experts.

National security officials’ letter

This extraordinary letter also starts off (after an introductory paragraph explaining who the group is) with a blanket statement: “None of us will vote for Donald Trump.” Once again, these are all Republicans, not some partisan sniping by Democrats. This letter minces no words whatsoever.

From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump is not qualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief. Indeed, we are convinced that he would be a dangerous President and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.

Most fundamentally, Mr. Trump lacks the character, values, and experience to be President. He weakens U.S. moral authority as the leader of the free world. He appears to lack basic knowledge about and belief in the U.S. Constitution, U.S. laws, and U.S. institutions, including religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and an independent judiciary.

The letter ends by first explaining all the qualities and temperament necessary for any president (willing to listen to advisors, acknowledge errors, be disciplined, etc.). Then it tears into how far Trump falls short:

In our judgment, Mr. Trump has none of these critical qualities. He is unable or unwilling to separate truth from falsehood. He does not encourage conflicting views. He lacks self-control and acts impetuously. He cannot tolerate personal criticism. He has alarmed our closest allies with his erratic behavior. All of these are dangerous qualities in an individual who aspires to be President and Commander-in-Chief, with command of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

We understand that many Americans are profoundly frustrated with the federal government and its inability to solve pressing domestic and international problems. We also know that many have doubts about Hillary Clinton, as do many of us. But Donald Trump is not the answer to America’s daunting challenges and to this crucial election. We are convinced that in the Oval Office, he would be the most reckless President in American history.

C’mon, guys, tell us what you really think! Sorry, but at some point you just have to laugh at the language fellow Republicans are using against their own candidate. This letter lays out one targeted idea — Trump being unfit to handle foreign policy — while the next brings a very different focus.

Begging the RNC to bail on Trump

The third letter is entirely political in nature, since it was addressed to Reince Priebus and the Republican National Committee. It begs the R.N.C. to ditch Trump in no uncertain terms, from the second paragraph onwards.

Given the catastrophic impact that Donald Trump’s losing presidential campaign will have on down-ballot Senate and House races, we urge you to immediately suspend all discretionary RNC support for Trump and focus the entirety of the RNC’s available resources on preserving the GOP’s congressional majorities.

They have already given up on winning the White House, obviously, and are now terrified that they are facing a disastrous landslide in November.

We believe that Donald Trump’s divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence, and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide, and only the immediate shift of all available RNC resources to vulnerable Senate and House races will prevent the GOP from drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck.

This should not be a difficult decision, as Donald Trump’s chances of being elected president are evaporating by the day.

“Evaporating by the day” — that has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? The letter then lists all the reasons why Trump has already “alienated millions of voters of all parties,” most of which are specific but also including a few catchall items on the list, such as: “Exposing his total ignorance of basic foreign policy matters,” and: “Deliberately and repeatedly lying about scores of issues, large and small.” They even slam Trump for not releasing his tax forms, then continue in the same vein.

Those recent outrages have built on his campaign of anger and exclusion, during which he has mocked and offended millions of voters, including the disabled, women, Muslims, immigrants, and minorities. He also has shown dangerous authoritarian tendencies, including threats to ban an entire religion from entering the country, order the military to break the law by torturing prisoners, kill the families of suspected terrorists, track law-abiding Muslim citizens in databases, and use executive orders to implement other illegal and unconstitutional measures.

Since it’s a letter with a political focus, it then turns to the dismal polling they’ve been seeing:

[C]urrent polling gives Trump barely a 15 percent chance of being elected president in November. That polling projects a potential 350 electoral vote blowout for Hillary Clinton, including a sweep of every battleground state from Florida to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina. Trump’s across-the-board collapse has put even Republican bastions like Georgia and Arizona in play.

That’s a pretty apocalyptic statement for the beginning of August! It’s understandable when people get nervous a few weeks out from an election, but the general election has barely begun, and these Republicans are already worried about Hillary Clinton getting 350 electoral votes.

The letter then itemizes Trump’s refusal to support members of the Republican Party, which includes things like calling an “incumbent Republican Senator a ‘loser’ to his Senate peers,” and “Repeating his false and outlandish claims that yet another Senator’s father played some role in the Kennedy assassination.” This leads them to an extraordinary conclusion — again, it is only early August.

In summary, every dollar spent by the RNC on Donald Trump’s campaign is a dollar of donor money wasted on the losing effort of a candidate who has actively undermined the GOP at every turn. Rather than throwing good money after bad, the RNC should shift its strategy and its resources to convince voters not to give Hillary Clinton the “blank check” of a Democrat-controlled Congress to advance her big government agenda.

Rick Wilson minces no words

All of that was pretty scathing, we’ve got to admit. Republican-on-Republican violence is never pretty to watch, to put it mildly. But when reading an article in Salon which detailed how many extreme rightwing strategists and media types have denounced Trump, the following really stood out. We close today with the thoughts of Rick Wilson, “GOP strategist.”

I have opposed Trump from the first day of his wretched, crapulous campaign. I have opposed Trump when his clownish minions called my clients seeking to have me fired. I have opposed The Donald when his slavish of Trumpbart stooges ran story after story attacking me, and unleashed their fever-swamp yokels on my email, my phone and my family.

I will continue to oppose Trump, implacably and unceasingly.

I will not bend. I will not cease this fight. I will never embrace this thuggish, venal, gibbering psychotic, and I will not countenance those who do. I don’t care if I’m the last Republican in America standing to resist this man, but with almighty God as my witness, I will not vote for Donald Trump.

Identity Crisis: The Difficult Task Of Becoming Who You Are

2016-08-12-1470965200-1850968-woman441415_640.jpg

Identity crisis: a feeling of unhappiness and confusion caused by not being sure about what type of person you really are or what the true purpose of your life is.
Merriam Webster
* * *

I envied people who knew right out of the gates who they were and what they wanted from life. It took me years, sixty-two years, to determine that for myself.

For the most part my identity was a function of my gender. I was a daughter. My parents had expectations of a girl who was also the oldest child. My role was predetermined and I felt accepted when they praised me for being what they wanted me to be. Teachers came next and again I performed my student role, not to learn, but to please. At sixteen I had a steady boyfriend. Clueless, I tried to imagine what kind of girl he wanted and became that creature.

Education beyond high school wasn’t a priority since it was assumed I would marry, have a family, and live life in the pattern set by others in the small town in Northern Minnesota where I grew up. When I said I wanted to go to college and study law, the idea sounded preposterous to friends and relatives. Very few women were lawyers in those days but I knew one who was so I broached the subject with her. She was quick to suggest an alternative. “You’ll just get married and waste all that money. How do you know if you’ll like law? You should study to become a legal secretary instead.”

So I did.

And then, as predicted, I got married.

The wife role was similar to the girlfriend gig: figure out what the husband wants and give it to him. That didn’t go well. I was too self-sufficient, too uncomplaining, too focused on being what I imagined was everything he ever wanted. Divorces littered my journey.

The third marriage survived seventeen years. For the first time my life had definable purpose. I was a mother and I believed in myself and my abilities to raise happy, healthy, reasonably well-adjusted children. I wouldn’t do what had been modeled for me. My three girls would be taught that anything was possible. I wouldn’t hold them back by telling them ‘they would just get married’ or that college was ‘a waste of time.’

When I saw the end of their dependent years approaching, dread descended like a shroud. I’d continued to work as a legal secretary, a job that never satisfied me. I couldn’t get past the feeling that I should have been the one in the courtroom advocating for the clients. I wanted something challenging and new to define me when the girls left home. I imagined a career that I’d love, something to utilize both the left and right sides of the brain.

“Have you considered interior design?” a friend asked. She mentioned that she’d gotten her degree in that field twenty years ago. My ears perked. A quick search showed that a Bachelor of Science in interior design was available at the University of Minnesota, a few miles from home. The more I read about the program the more it felt right. I registered, became a student once again, and at forty-six I graduated at the top of my class.

I embraced the designer role dressing and acting the part. I was good at my job, so good in fact that I partnered with another designer and opened a studio in the high-end International Market Square Design Center in downtown Minneapolis. I’d hit my stride at mid-life and now another milestone approached. I wondered who I wanted to be as a retired, single woman.

By then I was divorced for the fifth time. (I never have figured out how to ace the wife role.) My plans wouldn’t include a mate. If I knew anything for sure, I knew I’d closed the partnered chapters forever. The future stretched ahead, a broad expanse of possibility. It felt delicious and terrifying.

I spent the years between sixty and sixty-two working, saving money, paying off debt, downsizing, and journaling. I called the method I developed Writing for Self-Discovery. It was a formula based on a stream-of-consciousness flow interrupted by why’s. Questions that challenged and coaxed the truth out of long-repressed silent chambers did their revealing work. The process put me face-to-face with unflattering truths. But as I wrote I recognized patterns, exposed co-dependent behaviors, hated myself, forgave myself, and began to understand how to take care of myself in healthy ways.

In, around, and through the journaling swam the bigger issues: What did I love to do? Where on the planet did I feel most supported and nurtured? Could I dare to dream big? What if I could have what I wanted, and for that matter, what did I want?

When the time arrived I had answers: I would take an early retirement, move to Indonesia, and write. I dreaded Midwest winters and longed for tropical heat. I had visited Bali once and her magic hadn’t left me. I’d never believed I could make a living with words so I hadn’t tried. Now I didn’t have to write for money to survive. It was time to devote myself fully to the joy of creating story. Social security would support a modest lifestyle and the thought of forging a new existence in a culture that was in most ways opposite from the one I knew, thrilled me.

For the past five years I’ve lived that dream, 100 percent in touch with who I am, loving myself and my life. My three daughters found partners. I flew back for weddings and my father’s funeral. And then my middle child dropped a bombshell.

“Hi grandma!” she said when I answered the phone.

I’d like to describe the avalanche of sensations brought on by that call. I’m a writer! I should be able to communicate the wild swing from elation to fear and back again like a pendulum gone awry. For a blissful five years I’d known who I was. My identity had fit like skin: writer, traveler, adventurer, the one who’d broken out of the box, youthful, exotic, a bit eccentric, definitely non-conformist. How did grandmother fit into that description?

I was the right age but I’d avoided thinking about grandmother-hood. I couldn’t imagine what it should, could, would, look like for me. So as my daughter waited patiently for my response, thrilled with her news, I knew that I was deliriously happy for her and would sort myself out later.

The baby came three weeks early. I changed my flight and hurried to be with the new parents and my granddaughter. When I saw her, tinier than anything I imagined possible, a dam-burst of love flooded my heart. As I cuddled, bounced, rocked, and loved her, I realized that the identity crisis of being a grandmother had evaporated at the first sight of her, defenseless, small, and precious.

After being with her for six weeks I knew that in addition to being a granny, I was still everything I’d been before. But in that time I’d softened toward an image that grouped me with the elderly, the stereotypical sensible shoes and white bun with wire-rimmed glasses. That was the picture I’d rejected, abhorred, and tried to avoid because it meant only one thing: old. But holding her close as she burrowed into me, stroking the velvety silk of her hair, smelling the baby sweetness, I saw the line stretching forward, my children, my grandchildren, their children.

Grandmother-hood isn’t a choice. It’s thrust upon us and suddenly we’re not ‘less than,’ but expanded beings, something more than we were before. I see that now. I have another human to love who already loves me, a granddaughter to carry my genes for another generation into the future.

Zika Could Be Spreading Beyond Miami’s Defined Transmission Area

The Florida Health Department confirmed three new local Zika cases in Miami-Dade county on Friday. One of those cases was located outside of the boundary thought to contain the only local Zika outbreak in the United States ― a less than one-square-mile area in the trendy Wynwood neighborhood of Miami.

The health department’s website noted that the investigation into this third case is just beginning and that the department would work to eradicate and control mosquitos in the area of interest. It’s unclear whether this third patient lives and works outside of Wynwood, has never been to Wynwood, or if those things are still under investigation.

It appears, however, that experts’ previous criticism of the CDC’s narrow Zika transmission travel warning was on target: “To assume that it’s just restricted to these few square blocks is presumptuous,” Dr. Peter Hotez, dean for the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston told Reuters on August 1.

Despite this new case, Florida Health Department officials reaffirmed the previously drawn Wynwood boundary, stating on their website: “The department still believes active transmissions are only taking place within the identified area that is less than one-square mile in Miami-Dade county.”

The three new local cases were announced in conjunction with 10 additional travel-related cases of Zika virus in Florida, four in Orange, two in Miami-Dade, one in Leon, one in Palm Beach and one in Sarasota counties. At last count, Florida had 413 travel related infections, 28 local infections and 58 cases of Zika virus in pregnant women.

The situation is especially concerning for pregnant women because the virus is linked to the severe birth defect microcephaly, which causes babies to have smaller than normal heads and can result in developmental disabilities, seizures, seizures, feeding problems, learning issues and vision loss. The virus is also linked to arthrogryposis, a birth defect that causes infants to be born with malformed joints that can’t extend properly.

The Florida Health Department could not be immediately reached for comment.

Hooked

Hooked

Knocked around by life-and then knocked up by a man she won’t speak of-Sam Kendall gives her baby for adoption. Envisioning herself a lone cowboy, she avoids any relationships that might risk her heart or cause pain. There’s wonderful fun to be had if you don’t fall prey to the ludicrous notion of true love! Lately, however, Sam is niggled by doubts. She’s not as content as she was. Plus her daughter Aisha has tracked her down-seventeen-years-old and pregnant. Despite misgivings, Sam checks into River’s Sigh Bed-and-Breakfast to meet her. Then widower Charles Bailey, Aisha’s adoptive father, shows up, and Sam can’t control her outrage. What was her sacrifice for? She could’ve raised the kid to follow her stupid footsteps all on her own. And topping it off? Charlie’s a neurotic, stodgy jerk-even if he is ridiculously hot. The longer Sam stays at River’s Sigh, exploring the wild outdoors-and her own inner desires-the more her terror grows. Maybe Charlie isn’t so terrible after all. Maybe his approach to life is actually refreshing. Maybe all this family stuff is something she could get hooked on. Yet they’re opposites in every way, and worse: he’s her biological child’s adoptive dad. A romance between them would be too weird, wouldn’t it? Every part of Sam screams play it safe, run. But what if, in spurning Charlie and Aisha, she’s turning her back on everything she never knew she wanted?

This Dad-Daughter Conversation Will Make You Want To Call Your Parents

At some point in your life, you realize your parents are only human: They make mistakes and are probably more like you than you ever recognized growing up.

In the latest installment from “The And,” an interactive documentary series about relationships and familial love, a single dad and daughter from the Netherlands sit down for a heartfelt conversation that touches on their similarities and the challenges they’ve faced together.

The father, Jhein, admits that it worries him that Rosa, the daughter he’s raised on his own since the divorce, is so similar to him.

“You’re so much like me and I haven’t made it easy for myself in my life,” he says. “I see you going that way, too, and I don’t want that for you. When I worry about this, I hope you’ll reassure me that it’s OK that you are the way you are.”

“It’s OK,” Rosa sweetly reminds her dad.

Watch Jhein and Rosa’s full conversation in the video above.

Yogis have their community of spiritual gangsters, boxers relate with each other over their jab-cross-hook combos, and runners all know what hitting the wall feels like. Hey HIIT class addicts and boot camp fanatics, what about you?

Maybe you mistake random objects for kettlebells. Or find yourself randomly breaking out into a series of jump squats. But if your favorite workout is a heart-pumping full-body burn, you’re going to notice some recurring themes.

We brainstormed with Chad McDonald, founder of SOLACE New York in New York City, to come up with the things you learn when you spend your time planking, leg-lifting, and burpee-ing with the best of them.

Read on for 10 things you’ll only understand if you do boot camp workouts on the reg.

Bill Maher Reveals ’25 More Things You Don’t Know’ About Hillary Clinton

Bill Maher has been imagining what Hillary Clinton’s rivals would say in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” ever since the Democratic nominee answered the magazine’s questions herself in April.

In recent weeks, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has poked fun at Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Donald TrumpAnd this week, with the Democratic National Convention just days away, it was Clinton’s turn to be spoofed.

“We’ve done a bunch of the other candidates and we thought we’d circle back because this is her big week coming up,” Maher said Friday, before letting loose with such wisecracks as her “secret service codename is ‘Nutcracker” and she is surprised nobody’s noticed “that I’ve switched from pantsuits to space suits.”

Check out the clip above to see what else was included in the list.

Here’s how Maher previously spoofed Sanders:

This is how Maher imagined Ted Cruz would reply:

And here are Donald Trump’s fictional responses:

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

The Natural Flow (BPA Free) Wide Neck Bottles (2pk) – 4oz by Dr. Brown is designed using an exclusive 2-piece internal vent mechanism. This facilitates positive pressure flow feeding, which is similar to breastfeeding. During feeds, air is transferred from the teat collar through the vent system to the back of the bottle. The air circumvents the breast milk or formula and minimizes oxidation. Also, the essential nutrients of the feed like vitamins A, C and E are preserved. As babies don’t have to fight the discomfort of ingesting air bubbles, feeds are longer and easier. This bottle helps significantly reduce gas, colic and spit-ups.

Samantha Bee: ‘Indiana Hates Mike Pence As Much As Indiana Jones Hates Snakes’

Samantha Bee is back on air after a three-week hiatus ― and she’s gone full throttle for Donald Trump’s vice-presidential choice, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

“Indiana voters hate Pence as much as Indiana Jones hates snakes,” the comedian said during her opening monologue on “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” Monday night.

Bee showed footage of people booing Pence being while he threw out the first pitch at an Indiana baseball game, along with negative headlines criticizing him as being out of his league.

“Who is Mike Pence?” Bee asked during the segment. “If you’re a lady Hoosier, you may recognize him as the governor who inspected your reproductive organs every 30 days to make sure you weren’t using them in ways that would make Jesus sad.”

Bee pointed out that Pence signed a law requiring funerals for fetuses after an abortion or miscarriage.

“The law was blocked by a federal judge, but not before Pence had closed down every abortion clinic not equipped with a full complement of funeral bagpipers, you know, for the woman’s safety,” she said. “In that state, having a miscarriage could land you in jail for 20 years, so if you’re driving through Indiana and the contractions start, cross your legs and don’t stop till you’re in Chicago!”

Bee did see a positive in Pence being picked as the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s Veep.

“Congratulations Indiana! You just got rid of one of the worst governors you’ve ever had,” she said, while offering condolences to the Garden State.

“I’m sorry New Jersey, you were this close,” she said while holding her thumb and forefinger barely apart.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

    Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

    Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

    All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

    Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

    2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

    What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

    It was a miracle.

    2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

    2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

22 Pieces Of Advice For First-Time Solo Travelers

After six solo adventures, I’ve learned the ins-and-outs about what it’s like to go off on your own. Here are a few bits of wisdom I picked up along the way.

    Mindset Preparation

    1. Forget everything you’ve heard or read.

There’s no right or wrong way to solo travel. Do whatever you want, without worry about what other people expect you to be doing. If you want to sleep, sleep. If you don’t want to see that cultural monument, don’t. No one, even someone with solo travel experience, can tell you how this trip is going to go. Each person’s solo adventures are experienced uniquely to that person. So before you go, try really hard to clear out all the stories you’ve read and heard.

    2. Be truthful about your needs.

It’s okay to not know what you’re getting yourself into. There are so many things that are and aren’t going to happen on this trip that you could never expect. But you should also be truthful about the things you do want and need. If you want to meet new people, then you can plan your trip in a way that caters to that. If you want to sleep a little more comfortably, spend the extra money and make it happen.

    3. Know that you can reach out to loved ones if you need.

This doesn’t make you weak and doesn’t have to take away from your trip. If you are in a moment of fear or loneliness, send that text or make that call. As long as you’re being honest with yourself about the journey of the trip, there’s nothing you can do that will make it less yours.

    4. Don’t have everything planned.

Leave some room for spontaneity and unforeseeable adventures.

    5. Be prepared to be vulnerable…

…and hyper self-aware of your awkwardness and insecurities. This is not meant to scare you, but being alone in a new place and meeting new people can be terrifying. But remember, there’s a reason you want to do this, and there’s also an internal knowing that you can do this if you’re going through with it.

    Practical Tips

    6. Always keep more cash on you than you think you’ll need.

And never keep it in the same place. You won’t have someone with you to spot you, or someone to rely on bailing you out. You never know when you’ll need to convert more money, when cash is the only payment type accepted or if you’ll lose your credit cards.

    7. Email a copy of your passport, flight itineraries and lodging confirmation to yourself and a loved one.

You never know when you might need it.

    8. Carry around important phone numbers and addresses.

These include the hotel or hostel you’re staying at, your credit card’s international number and the local U.S. embassy.

    9. Get in touch with your hotel or hostel before you leave.

They may have free shuttles and great tips for transportation to and from the airport.

    10. Don’t pack more than you can carry yourself.

You are responsible for your belongings from the minute you land to the minute you’re back on the return flight. You’re going to want to be able to comfortably carry your luggage, whether it’s walking up three flights of stairs in a hostel or taking public transportation to and from the airport. Plus, you never know if you’re going to spontaneously want to hop on a train to a neighboring city for a night.

    11. Go for practical over cute.

You’re not going to need several pairs of shoes; always pack comfortable walking/adventure shoes. Pack light, because you’ll likely repeat outfits (and depending on the length of your trip, you can do laundry while traveling). Choose a practical day-pack with zippers and pockets so you can store everything safely over a nice purse or bag. And pack travel-sized, must-need toiletries so you can throw them out or leave them there.

    12. Ziploc bags are your friends.

For your toiletries; for saving stubs and tickets; for securing your phone when you randomly go hiking in the rain.

    13. Pack a lock.

    Just do it.

    14. Bring a deck of cards and a good book.

Cards are a great way to break the ice with other travelers. A good book is great company at cafes, solo meals and on a bench with a spectacular view.

Making The Most Of Your Trip

    15. Keep a journal.

Journaling is a great way to jot down adventures, but it’s also a good for exploring feelings and thoughts of loneliness, awkwardness and fear. At the very least, always journal on the flight to your trip, and on the flight back home. It’s incredible to see the difference in your mindset.

    16. Look into local walking tours and hostel events.

Walking tours are a free and fun way to see the city and meet people. Most hostels host events like community dinners and pub crawls so travelers can meet each other, and a lot of them also have community boards with other travelers looking for company on random day trips.

    17. Wander aimlessly.

Wandering without any time restraints is a wonderful way to see things you didn’t find on forums or in guidebooks.

    18. And if you get lost, keep roaming.

As long as you’re safe, if you feel a pang of being lost, keep roaming. There have been many times where I could have stopped, paralyzed with fear that I wouldn’t find my way, but as I kept roaming things started to look familiar or I’d meet someone willing to help me.

    19. Remember: People are inherently kind.

Talking to strangers can be a scary feat, but take that deck of cards and talk to that group of travelers. Hang out in common spaces in the hostel. Make eye contact, smile and be aware of how you’re presenting your friendliness. Initiate conversations when you have the slightest desire to do so. Go to that social event by yourself. In all my experiences of solo traveling, and in general of talking to strangers (something I’ve gotten good at), people are likely to be kind back to you, nine-out-of-10 times.

    20. Talk to locals.

I can’t stress this enough. Even if it’s the guy who works at the grocery store as you’re buying a bottle of water, ask locals for must-see spots and eats. They’ll give you tips you wouldn’t have been able to know of on your own. And ask locals about their stories ― how long have they been living here? How has the city changed after X event happened? You’ll directly learn so much about the history and culture of a place by talking to the people who live there.

    21. Embrace the awkwardness and loneliness.

Don’t fight them off and don’t be upset when they (and they will) overwhelm you. They are critical and uncomfortable aspects of traveling alone, but they will teach you so much about yourself.

    22. Trust yourself.

You are equipped with everything you need ― strength, intuition, a sense of adventure ― to make this trip everything it should be for you.

The Future of Public Health: A Scenario Study, Scenario Report Commissioned by the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios

The Future of Public Health: A Scenario Study, Scenario Report Commissioned by the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios

How can the public health system best be organised in the future and which factors are the main determinants thereof?
These are key questions in the scenario report The Future of Public Health: a Scenario Study. The report is the result of a study commissioned by the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios and carried out by a research team of the TNO Institute of Preventive Health Care and the STG Scenario Committee on the Future of Public Health. The report focuses on activities in collective prevention of diseases, generally known as primary prevention.
The future images developed make use of two examples, the control of infectious diseases and public health for the elderly. In designing those scenarios, two sets of possible trends were combined: centralisation versus decentralisation and nationalisation versus privatisation.
These combinations resulted in three scenarios; a local government scenario, a central government scenario, and a private enterprise scenario. The consequences of these future alternatives were developed in terms of their effect on organisation, policy control, financing, information supply, expertise and effectiveness.
Although the report primarily focuses on the public health system in the Netherlands, the analysis of the processes examined, and the alternative scenarios based on them are also thought-provoking for readers throughout the world.

Zuzu’s Petals: A True Story of Second Chances

Sometimes it takes nearly dying to learn how to live. Lauren Larsen thought she had a wonderful life: loving marriage, good friends, successful career, and her first child on the way. Shortly after she entered the ninth month of what had been an easy pregnancy, her husband, Jeff, followed a sudden and inexplicable urge to bring her flowers in the middle of a busy workday. Within hours of his visit, their lives would change forever. The rapid onset of a pregnancy-related disorder nearly claimed the lives of both Lauren and her baby. After more than a month in intensive care, and with years of recovery work ahead of her, Lauren was left with the question: What now? Amidst the wreckage of her near-fatal illness, an opportunity emerged – the chance to rebuild a different life, one that was more personally meaningful and fulfilling. With absolute clarity about their limited time on earth, Lauren and Jeff changed their priorities, their careers, their lifestyle, and even where they lived. As her physical strength grew, so too did Lauren’s understanding of just how many people – nurses, doctors, friends, family, and anonymous blood donors – had contributed to giving her a second chance at life. An overwhelming sense of gratitude emerged and found expression through her fundraising campaigns and national speaking tour. And along the way, Lauren became a shamelessly proud mother who sought to live as joyfully as possible no matter the circumstances. At times heartbreaking, at times la

    It’s Up To Us Now

Unless you’re 88 years old, most of us have not lived in a world without Elie Wiesel. We had a champion who carried our pain, our guilt and our responsibility on his shoulders for generations. Now he’s gone. It’s hard to fathom. So I guess it’s up to us now. To fight for the disenfranchised. To speak truth to power and to never forget how cruel man can be to man. In memory of Elie it’s the least we can do. Rest in peace my friend. You brought us this far. We’ll take it from here.

9 Signs That You’re An Ambivert

    2016-06-29-1467225627-2860078-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP.jpg

I’m sure you’ve been asked many times whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert. For some people, it’s an easy choice, but for most of us, it’s difficult to choose one way or the other.

It’s hard to choose because the introvert/extrovert dichotomy reflects a tired and outdated view of personality. Personality traits exist along a continuum, and the vast majority of us aren’t introverts or extroverts — we fall somewhere in the middle.

Personality consists of a stable set of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Personality traits form at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isn’t one of them.

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”
    –Bruce Lee

The continuum between introversion and extroversion captures one of the most important personality traits. It’s troubling that we’re encouraged to categorize ourselves one way or the other because there are critical strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with each type.

Adam Grant at Wharton set out to study this phenomenon, and his findings are fascinating. First, he found that two-thirds of people don’t strongly identify as introverts or extroverts. These people (aka, the vast majority of us) are called ambiverts, who have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. The direction ambiverts lean toward varies greatly, depending on the situation.

Think of introversion and extroversion as a spectrum, with ambiversion lying somewhere in the middle:

    2016-06-29-1467225709-2646074-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP2.jpg

Ambiverts have a distinct advantage over true introverts and extroverts. Because their personality doesn’t lean too heavily in either direction, they have a much easier time adjusting their approach to people based on the situation. This enables them to connect more easily, and more deeply, with a wider variety of people.

Grant’s research also disproved the powerful and widely held notion that the best-performing salespeople are extroverts. He found that ambiverts’ greater social flexibility enabled them to outsell all other groups, moving 51 percent more product per hour than the average salesperson. Notice how sales increased as extroversion increased, peaking with those who were just moderately extroverted.

    2016-06-29-1467225786-6624873-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP3.jpg

Grant explained the finding this way:

“Because they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale, but are more inclined to listen to customers’ interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident.”

How Ambiversion Works in the Brain

How social you are is largely driven by dopamine, the brain’s feel-good hormone. We all have different levels of dopamine-fueled stimulation in the neocortex (the area of the brain that is responsible for higher mental functions such as language and conscious thought). Those who naturally have high levels of stimulation tend to be introverts — they try and avoid any extra social stimulation that might make them feel anxious or overwhelmed. Those with low levels of stimulation tend to be extroverts. Under-stimulation leaves extroverts feeling bored, so they seek social stimulation to feel good.

Most people’s levels of natural stimulation don’t reach great extremes, though it does fluctuate. Sometimes you may feel the need to seek out stimulation, while other times, you may avoid it.

Finding Out Whether You’re An Ambivert

It’s important to pin down where you fall in the introversion/extroversion scale. By increasing your awareness of your type, you can develop a better sense of your tendencies and play to your strengths.

If you think that you might be an ambivert, but aren’t certain, see how many of the following statements apply to you. If most of them apply, you’re most likely an ambivert.

    1. I can perform tasks alone or in a group. I don’t have much preference either way.
    2. Social settings don’t make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.
    3. Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I don’t like it to last.
    4. Some people think I’m quiet, while others think I’m highly social.
    5. I don’t always need to be moving, but too much down time leaves me feeling bored.
    6. I can get lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation.
    7. Small talk doesn’t make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring.
    8. When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes I’m skeptical, and other times, I dive right in.
    9. If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained.

The trick to being an ambivert is knowing when to force yourself to lean toward one side of the spectrum when it isn’t happening naturally. Ambiverts with low self-awareness struggle with this. For example, at a networking event, a self-aware ambivert will lean toward the extroverted side of the scale, even when it has been a long day and he or she has had enough of people. Mismatching your approach to the situation can be frustrating, ineffective, and demoralizing for ambiverts.

    Bringing It All Together

TalentSmart has conducted research with over a million people and found that those in the upper echelon of performance at work also tend to be highly self-aware (90 percent of them, in fact). By gaining a better sense of where you fall on the introversion/extroversion scale, you can build insight into your tendencies and preferences, which increases your self-awareness and emotional intelligence. This will help you improve your performance.

So, are you an ambivert? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

See How Fireworks Injuries Skyrocket On July 4th

By Natalie Bronshtein and Megan Thielking

The Fourth of July always brings a slew of patients with fireworks injuries into ERs across the country. But it’s not solely an Independence Day phenomenon. Federal researchers track data on those injuries year-round.

Children are much more likely than adults to get hurt — 12-year-olds sustain more fireworks injuries than any other age group.

“Presumably they’re getting their fireworks from their parents,” said Joseph Canner, a Johns Hopkins researcher who has studied fireworks injuries. “That’s very disconcerting.”

Four states allow residents to legally purchase fireworks at age 12: Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.

Fireworks laws aren’t standardized nationally. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, it’s illegal to buy or sell fireworks at all. In Ohio, fireworks are available for purchase, but consumers have to sign a document stating they’ll take them out of the state within 48 hours.

The data isn’t detailed enough to determine how, exactly, those laws affect injury rates. “But there seems to be sort of a trend toward areas of the country where laws are more relaxed to have higher rates of injuries,” Canner said.

Age isn’t the only factor playing into fireworks injuries: Men are more likely to be hurt than women.

“Even if they’re 21 years old, if they don’t take responsibility for using the fireworks correctly, or if they’re under the influence and not using correctly, they can get hurt,” said Ralph Apel, spokesperson for the National Council on Fireworks Safety.

The most common type of injury: thermal burns. Sparklers, while easy for kids to use and play with, can be particularly dangerous.

“Sparklers are a pretty simple device, but they burn hot,” said Apel.

The injuries span a wide range — ranging from a 2-year-old boy who sustained a burn to his eye after his brother accidentally hit him with a sparkler to a 23-year-old who had a bottle rocket explode in his hands and needed a finger amputated.

Some of the data points are indirect injuries; one patient suffered bites after fireworks spooked a nearby dog.

Apel said he urges anyone using fireworks to read labels carefully so “they know what the firework is gonna do before they start.”

Experts also recommend that people lighting fireworks that shoot out or up immediately step away after lighting them. Depending on how long the fuse is, you have between three and 12 seconds to make it a safe distance away, Apel said.

“If you bend down on your haunches, light a fuse, get up, and walk away,” Apel noted, “in three seconds you can be quite a ways away.”

At last it’s my turn to write about my favorite subject-me! Everyone else has complained about writing their autobiographies, but I’ve been looking forward to it. It’s a chance for me to think about all the things that have happened in my short but incredible life. Some were happy, some were sad, some were funny. For instance, I was almost born in Yankee Statium! Maybe that’s why I like softball so much. And look at all the changes my family has been through, starting with my parents’ divorce, anding with the time I finally saw my father again, seven years later. See what I mean? My short (so far) but incredible life. Who knows where I’ll go from here? There’s always the White House.

Bill Maher Says ‘Pride And Prejudice’ Won Out In UK’s Brexit Vote

Bill Maher turned to Jane Austen to explain the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union.

On Friday, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host referenced two of the 18th century British writer’s novels while breaking down the surprise vote for Brexit.

“48 percent voted for ‘Sense and Sensibility,'” he said. “And 52 percent voted for ‘Pride and Prejudice.'”

The comedian said the issue of whether the U.K. should stay inside the European Union had been “hijacked by a bunch of anti-immigration isolationists who are obsessed with the idea that foreigners were stealing their jobs.”

“Thank God something like that never happened here,” he sarcastically added, in a clear nod towards Donald Trump.

Maher further mocked the presumptive GOP presidential candidate for being in favor of Brexit.

“Economists all over the world are saying this is a catastrophically stupid move, as evidence they offered lots of data, lots of charts, and the fact that Trump is for it,” he said.

    Watch the full clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

3 Life-Changing Reasons To Kick The Gossip Habit

Several years ago I made a vow to give up gossiping and doing so has made me realize how dangerous it is, truly dangerous.

It’s so easy to get caught in an enticing yet unkind conversation about someone else. But if you’ve ever been the target of gossip, as I have been, you know how painful it is. No matter how we excuse it, talking behind another’s back is a harmful habit. My definition of gossip is simple:

    Anything you wouldn’t say to
    the person you’re talking about

The joke is that a secret is something you tell only one person at a time, but the result is a rumor that spreads like wildfire and alters how another person is perceived. Haven’t we all heard tittle-tattle and thought, Who knew? I had no idea! Beatle George Harrison said it memorably ~

    Gossip is the Devil’s radio.

I know you don’t want to be known as a gossip, but it can be so tempting. So here are three reasons to motivate us to kick the habit and make a more positive impact on those around us.

    1. Gossip kills organizations. Whether it’s a global business, a school, a church, or a small partnership, talking behind others’ backs is death to the office. Fueling a negative perception about the boss, a direct report, or even a client saps positive energy from all concerned and diminishes the success of the organization.

In his Forbes magazine article Mike Myatt names it the fastest way to kill corporate culture: “The emotional distress and political discord associated with gossip undermines workplace performance, and can be nothing short of disastrous.”

    2. Gossip kills families. Being part of a strong and loving family is our greatest blessing, one that creates a safe and secure place for everyone fortunate enough to be part of it. Yet when an estrangement occurs, members take sides, and attention is pulled away from taking care of one another and doing our best to contribute to this gift.

My family is a large and loving one, but it too has fallen into this trap. Someone makes a mistake, the finger pointing begins, and the altered perception of this person grows until it’s no longer just gossip but a reason to pull back from the greater family. Fortunately our grandparents and parents were extraordinary models for us, so time goes by, wounds are healed, and we move on together.

    3. Gossip kills relationships. Women sitting around complaining about their husbands, men sharing jokes about wives, friends gossiping about the one who isn’t there. We might as well shoot ourselves in the foot, as the saying goes.

Only once in our 35-year marriage did we gossip about one another, and that was our darkest time. Fortunately we each realized the stories were of our own creation, and we let go of self-fulfilling prophecies that were killing the loving relationship we’d enjoyed for so long.

This habit is indeed the most dangerous one, and the cost is beyond measure. If you’re serious about breaking it, ask yourself, What can I do to break this habit? In addition, here are solutions that are working for me.

    1. Be aware of the pain I have caused others with my gossip.
    2. Let go of my stories about others, one by one, until they’re all gone.
    3. Be present and positive.

And let’s all remember the wisdom of Socrates:

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds
discuss events, weak minds discuss people.

The One Factor In The Brexit Vote No One Is Talking About

The U.K.’s historic vote to leave the European Union, many people believe, was driven by opinions on immigration

And it likely was influenced by the way people are psychologically wired. Analysts on Friday repeatedly cited voters’ emotions as the driver of Brexit. Many people may have voted with fear or anger as their primary motivator, even though it had been well known that leaving could have widespread consequences, including economic turmoil and adverse effects on public health

“We are leaving the EU and entering a dark and uncertain period,”Gary Younge, editor-at-large for The Guardian, wrote after the “leave” vote won Thursday’s referendum. “Offered a choice between fear of the unknown or fear of the foreigner, fear inevitably won. Britain lost.”

Why do we fall for fear or anger-based arguments?

Brexit supporters argued for strict controls on immigration, and said Britain’s membership in the EU led to loose borders. The EU’s free-movement policy allows European nationals to live and work in any EU state without a work permit.

The anti-immigration outcry was heightened by the surge of migrants and refugees, including many from the war-torn Middle East. More than 1 million refugees have poured into Europe, primarily in the past year.

The vote shows deep worry about immigrants and what they mean for job security, safety and economic growth — fears that many consider xenophobic.

It’s not hard to see the fear in Brexit supporters’ tweets:

Political language that incites fear by spotlighting terrorism risks, for example, can sway conservative voters, researchers say. Fearful voters are prone to choosing an outcome based on new information, often abandoning their previous loyalties or affiliations.

Many Brexit voters may have felt neutral or even uninformed about the EU, the alliance they voted to leave. The day after the referendum, many UK residents were Googling, “What is the EU?”

Those who are angry are less likely to be invested in the political status quo and the options available to them. Studies show angry voters tend to be partisan and unreceptive to points that conflict with their own, according to the American Psychological Association.

Emotions can rule in the voting booth

Psychologists are increasingly finding that emotions can play a major role in elections.

“Thinking and feeling go hand in hand. In any decision-making — including political decisions — how people feel about the information they’re being given is important,” Tereza Capelos, an expert in political psychology at Surrey University, told the BBC last year. “Emotions help people make decisions.”

Perhaps that’s why the Brexit decision was shocking. Those arguing for Britain to remain in the EU presented sensible reasons (public health, scientific research, the environment, the economy). But many people rejected those rational views and went with emotion. And for many, the result was devastating:

Europe isn’t the only place where fears and frustrations run amuck and influence voting. It’s happening in the U.S. as well, with Donald Trump riding his proposed ban on all Muslims from entering the U.S. to the Republican presidential nomination.

Of course, human nature is a complex construct. There are a lot of other psychological factors that can inform a person’s vote, from attack ads to a candidate’s physical appearance. But they all influence how an individual feels. That means emotions have a very large impact on important choices, like the Brexit referendum.

Fear and anger can have a lot of agency — but they don’t always make the best decisions. (You listening, America?)

Donald Trump’s Racism Actually Makes It Impossible For Him To Get The Working-Class Vote

The American working class is becoming a lot less white, a new analysis reveals — yet more evidence that the racist underpinnings of Donald Trump‘s campaign are not just morally abhorrent but, frankly, illogical.

By 2023 a majority of the working class, defined as employed adults with less than a bachelor’s degree, will be people of color, according to projections based on labor department data that the Economic Policy Institute released Thursday. The change will come faster for younger working people. In just five years, people of color — including Hispanics, Asian- and African-Americans — will make up a majority of working-class adults ages 18-27.

Today, people of color represent about 39 percent of the working class, according to EPI.

In explaining Donald Trump’s rise to political prominence, writers for The New York Times, The Washington Post and other outlets have said that his biggest strand of support comes from angry working-class Americans fed up with an economy that is leaving them behind. Trump promises to bring back lost jobs from overseas and to somehow renegotiate trade deals that disadvantage American workers.

But the reality TV star’s unabashed use of racism in his campaign is alienating a huge swath of working people and pitting lower-income Americans against each other.

“Trump is missing a large chunk of working class Americans,” Valerie Wilson, the EPI economist who authored the report, told The Huffington Post. “The strategy he is using is divisive. It makes it difficult for people to see how similar they are in terms of economic interest.”

In other words, Trump’s rhetoric hurts the very group he purports to want to rescue.

A good part of Trump’s appeal is aimed straight at the working class, which has suffered for decades as the underpinnings of the U.S. economy have transformed from the manufacturing to the service sector. Factory jobs have vanished and more and more people with high school and associate degrees are landing at Walmart or other lower-paying service sector jobs.

But Trump is also fueling the despair of the working class by fanning the flames of racial resentment. He has actually called Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals; suggested that a judge’s race or ethnicity prevents him from issuing fair rulings; proposed the U.S., which was founded on the core principle of religious freedom, actually ban an entire religious group from entering the country. He’s also made bizarre comments calling one rally attendee “my African-American.”

The voting data itself casts doubt on how much Trump actually appeals to the working classes. According to primary voting data analyzed by Nate Silver, Trump voters are in a higher income bracket.

Trump’s working class appeal is really just a white working-class appeal, George Packer writes in the New Yorker.

But that appeal is straight-up misguided as, increasingly, the interests of the white working class are not really different from the interests of the African-American or Hispanic working class, Wilson’s report notes.

Regardless of race, the working class’ biggest problem right now is wage stagnation. Pay is not going up for them — even as the incomes of the country’s top earners continue to soar.

For policy makers to truly address this rising income inequality, they’ll need to grapple with racial inequality, too.

“The two become more closely linked as this demographic transition gets closer,” Wilson said.

For example, black and Hispanic workers make less money per hour than their white counterparts. If this wage discrimination continues, Wilson said, that could mean yet more downward wage pressure for the working class.

The only real solution would be for the entire group to come together to marshall its political power to change things, Wilson said.

Wilson points to the success of the Fight for $ 15, the groups organizing for a hike in the minimum wage to $ 15 an hour. “Things are happening.”

Notably, Trump has been wishy-washy on supporting a minimum wage increase — despite saying he wants to improve prospects for working Americans.

It’s extremely unlikely that, a full year into his campaign, Trump is alienating nearly half of his supposed base simply out of ignorance. Instead, his tactics appear much more sinister and familiar: Pitting working-class Americans against each other, using race, instead of making progress on policies that could actually help them: Raising the minimum wage, creating a nationwide family leave law and offering better child care for working parents.

“The divisive politics is really a smokescreen to really addressing the issues at hand,” Wilson said. “It plays on people’s biases instead of addressing economic issues head-on.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
